Besides its scope of benefits that still holds substance in the mindsets of the local population of Pakistan, the conventional methods of irrigation have their share of disadvantages and setbacks too that discourage their further usage. For instance, the scope of the conventional methods of irrigation is very limited. In other words, these approaches could only manage to irrigate very small and constrained areas of land attributing to the small amount of water that is drawn from such methods. Secondly, these methods take a greater deal of time than modern methods and require manual and sometimes even animal labour that reduces its cost-efficiency. Also the method of constructing these conventional means of irrigation is a very complex one. Not only that but their maintenance and usage is also not a very convenient experience. These were some of the most significant disadvantages that makes one prefer modern methods over conventional methods in Pakistan.
