Square footage is the name of the total amount of surface area of a two-dimensional shape. Most commonly, this is measurement is used in real estate and landscaping, but it is not limited to use in those fields. Calculating square footage is very easy because you can find it by using simple multiplication formulas.

For a square or rectangle, you just have to multiply the length by the width. This is characterized by the equation: L * W = A. For example, if a rectangle had two sides that were 6 feet and two sides that were 5 feet, you would multiply 6 * 5 to get 30 ft. This is the square footage.

Generally speaking, this is the formula that apartment managers and home renters use to determine the size of a room or a space when they want to rent it. Most of the time, you can determine this very easily because a particular space is an exact rectangle or square. However, sometimes you may have to make several measurements and add them together to determine a more accurate square footage.

If the room has angles, for instance, you may need to also use the formula for finding the area of a triangle in addition to that of a parallelogram like a rectangle or square. The formula for finding the area of a triangle calls for you to know the length of the base and the height from the base to point opposite of it. The formula, then, would be: (L * W) / 2 = A Basically, use the same formula for a square and then divide by two.

Square footage refers to measured area being expressed in terms of feet. Each foot is made up of twelve inches and each square foot is twelve inches by twelve inches in size; in other words a hundred and forty four square inches. Square feet measurements are usually found used in the realm of real estate, heating and cooling appliance capacities etc. The formulas for area calculation do not change even in case square feet are being used; the area of a square is still the square of its side, a triangles area is still ½×base×heigt and a circle is still measured as πr².

The only complication being that the area is usually expressed in some other unit of measure such as square meters or square centimetres etc. Each square foot is 0.0929 square meters, 929.0304 square centimetres, 92903.04 square millimetres etc.

To calculate square feet you need to multiply, in feet, the length by the breadth (Width) of the area. If the length and breadth are in inches then divide your answer by 12.

Square foot is the unit used to express the area of an object which is the space covered or occupied by that object.

The formula used to calculate the area in terms of square feet of a square can be expressed as the square of the length of its side. For example if the length of the side of a square is 3 feet the area of the square will be 9 square feet.
Formula = length * length

If the object is in the shape of a rectangle then its area will be given by multiplying the length of the rectangle with its breadth. For example if the length of a rectangle is 5 and its breadth is 3 then its area will be 15 square feet.
Formula = length * breadth

In case of a triangle the area can be found out by multiplying the base and height of the triangle and then dividing by 2.
For example if the base of the triangle is 4 and its height is 6 then the area will be 12 square feet.
Formula = (Base * Height) 1/2

The area of a circular object can be found out by multiplying the square of the radius with 3.14 (pi). For example if the radius of a circle is 3 then the area will be 28.26 square feet.
Formula = r * r * 3.14 (pi)
