No single person, as there were half a dozen different inventions during the first half of the nineteenth century which are essentially typewriters. The first commercially successful typewriter was introduced by Remington in 1873, with its keys arranged in the classic QWERTY way. The notion of a separate keyboard did not arise until the 1950s and the emergence of the computer.
