We have all heard of the phrase that 'it's a free country; we could say whatever we want.' Freedom of speech is probably one of the most important civil liberties in a democratic society. Freedom of speech entitles the citizen to say or write whatever is there in their minds. This means that people have the right to openly criticise the government or other powerful institutions of their country. However there are various laws that limit his liberty. There are laws which censor videos cinema theatre and magazines.

Today however the media has really sidestepped these pressures and the media has more freedom then the individual alone. People have been able to get their voice across the globe .In a lot of countries the government has the control over official information various acts such as human rights act 1998 and international human rights law guarantee freedom of speech as a fundamental right of being a human being. These changes show that freedom of speech has become increasingly important particularly in the west .It is a sign of growing economies.

I believe George Washington gave us something to think about when he said, "If freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to slaughter". If we were unable to speak out against injustice or scream loudly when we witness cruelty and we were afraid to speak up and speak out against the traitors and tyrants of every nation, where would the United States be today? We would still be attached to the umbilical cord of the Queen of England and bowing down to the Hitler's of the world. We would still be trading in the slave flesh of other human beings. The poor would be subject to the whims of the rich. Our United States would be a much different nation than it is today. Long live freedom of speech!!

Freedom of speech is important because it lets us say whatever we want. Think of how it would be if we were completely limited in what we said. Nobody would be unique in their thoughts, since they would be restricted to a certain amount of speech.

Freedom of speech is important because we are able to say what is on our minds, for example: I think our government needs to be changed because..... But on the other hand, we can't go into a theater and yell :"There's a fire" when there isn't one, because in result of that you can go to jail or have to pay a fine. I hope this information helps answer your question. :)

Freedom of speech, considered the basic freedom by most philosophical thinkers, consists of several facets, including the right to express one’s opinion unhindered, unfettered by the fear of retribution. It is one of the most basic elements for a healthy, open minded democracy. It allows people to freely participate in the social and political happenings of their country.

Freedom of Speech and expression means the right to express one’s own convictions and opinions freely by words of mouth, writing, printing, pictures or any other mode. In modern time it is widely accepted that the right to freedom of speech is the essence of free society and it must be safeguarded at all time. The first principle of a free society is an untrammeled flow of words in an open forum. Liberty to express opinions and ideas without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment plays significant role in the development of that particular society and ultimately for that state. It is one of the most important fundamental liberties guaranteed against state suppression or regulation.
