Hibiscus plants need extra care outdoors during late fall and winter. The care that is provided depends on the severity of the cold temperatures in particular regions. If the temperature falls below freezing, this is normally a big problem for hibiscus plants that are kept outdoors. One way around this is to install a sprinkler system in the garden and turning the water on during a freeze. The water that travels through the pipes should be a warm temperature, and it should be ensured that the plants are coated with it. If the water is warm enough, it will act as a protective shield for the plants, although the water may freeze again after some time. To get around this problem, the water can be sprayed again if the plants look as though they are beginning to freeze again. The older a hibiscus plant the more likely it will survive cold temperatures. An older plant will have a thicker stem and will be able to live comfortably through occasional freezing nights. Because of their age they are able to grow new shoots each summer to replace any old or damaged ones. The most important thing to remember when caring for any outdoor plants is to make sure they receive plenty of light, water and heat when it is available throughout the year. The most at risk hibiscus plants are normally those that are approaching their first winter. If the temperature is particularly cold then the plants can be moved indoors, into a utility room or a garage. They can receive light from light bulbs for short periods and still survive and the temperature can be kept above freezing if there is some heating available to them. The most important thing to remember, if moving the plants indoors is that they require regular watering.

For heaven's sake, don't dig up your hibiscus from the garden just to bring it indoors, unless it is a tropical variety that isn't appropriate for your climate zone.

I simply apply a light bark mulch around the base of my hibiscus and prune lightly before the snow flies. I feed it in the Spring before it sets buds. It does fine, and I live in Denver, CO

You can buy special fleece to cover plants - but this can be expensive. Cheaper (but less attractive way) is to cover with bubble wrap - you know the plastic packaging with air bubbles secure with string.

You should keep it dry by placing it on the basement cool floor and pruning back hard.It will in this way become semi dormant. You should try giving it as light(sunshine) as possible.

I have a white substance that has invaded my hibiscus tree both on the leaves and on the trunk and stems. It looks like coton but is small and I have tried numerous sprays that have not rid the tree of this. Can you tell me what I am trying to rid and how to go about it?

For the better growth of Hibiscus, it should be protected from hot and cold environment. Care must be taken in the cold weather and if you have placed your hibiscus outside then place it in the protected area in the winters. If the plant is in the ground then you should cover it. There are different temperature ranges in different areas and covering up Hibiscus becomes necessary when temperature falls below freezing point.

Another way to protect the plant from very cold weather is to use an anti-transpirant. Pests can always attack the plant in winters as well therefore, use insecticidal soap in winters to kill the notorious pests. You can also reduce the watering of Hibiscus because in winters the level of transpiration is reduced and plant does not require much water.

You need to keep it in a room or garage where the temperature is not going to be below freezing
also add a little water periodically.

Depending on the region you live in, it is best to plant and keep your hibiscus in a very large pot. They will freeze in cold temperatures if not protected from outside elements. This way you can bring them inside and keep in a sunny spot. Best to water when the soil starts to feel dry. Over watering will make them loose their leaves and rot.
