Carbon Dioxide is found in gaseous state. The carbon atom has 4 electrons whereas oxygen atom has six electrons. Thus each atom needs 8 electrons to complete the outer shell. Thus the total number of electrons in a carbon dioxide is 16

Carbon has 4 electrons and each of the 2 oxygen atoms have 8 electrons....C+O+O=CO2
To be stable each atom must have 8 electrons.
Thus the 2 oxygen atoms each donate 2 electrons which are shared valence electrons.
The 2 donated electrons circle both the carbon and the oxygen atoms, so as there are a total of 4 donated electrons, each atom now has 8 electrons.
Total electrons are 20.....
