The major contributions that were made by Leeuwenhoek was that he developed the simple light microscope in the 1600s. From this development we now have complex electron microscopes that are more powerful than the one Leeuwenhoek developed.

Hooke was the first person to describe cells and developed part of the cell theory that was later refined by Schleiden and Schwann. Hooke used a compound microscope and discovered cell in a piece of bark.
