A BTU is defined as the amount of heat necessary to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit.

How much a BTU will affect a home and the air in it depends on the heat capacity of the air and the construction materials, and the temperature difference you want to bring about. It also depends on the rate of heat loss through the walls, ceiling, and floor. The "BTU per pound" or "BTU per ton" rating of the wood pellets would be the number you want to use for comparison. (Or perhaps BTU per dollar.)

BTU/$ = (BTU/pound)/($/pound)
