Libya has a population of 5.7 million people, out of which 1.7 million reside in Libya's capital, Tripoli. With around 90 percent of the country being a desert most of the population inhabits just a small portion of the country. The main spoken language is a local colloquial version of Arabic, which is also the official language. Libyans feel very connected and close to the wider Arab community. Libya has two main dialects and also some village and tribal dialects. Libyan Arabs are associated with a particular Bedouin tribe.
With a population density of around 3 persons per square kilometer in its two northern regions and less than one person elsewhere, it is by far one of the least densely populated countries. Most of its population is urban, with the maximum residing in Tripoli and Benghazi. Tamazight which is a Berber language and is mostly spoken by Libyan Berbers.
