We use troy ounce to express mass of metals like gold. Troy ounce is equal to about 31.103 476 grams.

A fine ounce is a troy ounce of 99.5% pure gold and standard ounce is a troy ounce of 22 carat gold which is 91.66% pure.

The real answer is that 1.1 troy ounces of gold equals one ounce.

In other words, a troy ounce of gold is about 1/10th more than the ounces you are used to seeing at the supermarket.

Gold is measured in troy ounces which is 1/10th greater than a 'regular' ounce (avoirdupois)

But, a troy pound is 12 troy ounces, not 16.
