Coal is basically the remains of an ancient forest that has been burned or demolished and then buried under soil for thousands of years. Much the same as oil is the remains of dinosaurs. This is why each are considered carbon based fuels as they are the remnants of life in ancient times and produce greenhouse gases when consumed.
