Well everyone knows the answer, particularly American readers who have had to learn it by heart at school. There are 46 - and there are 46 because Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are not states. They are, technically speaking, Commonwealths.
Despite the title this doesn't give them any extra constitutional powers. It was a matter of choice at the end of the War of Independence. This is what they elected to be called. In choosing the title they were affirming that they were no longer colonies belonging to Great Britain and having to do the bidding of the King. They were in fact governed by the common consent of the people.

Well, if you are studying it, then why not use your text book and look it up, instead of cheating, cause that's what you are doing. You can be kicked out of school for that. You don't deserve to get an A on whatever you are working on. And besides, why not just count the stars on the flag?
