There has been a discovery by scientists that eukaryotes, bacteria and archaea coexisted 2.7 billion years ago. This discovery came from the chemical examination of shale samples. The samples were loaded with oily remains of archaea found in a Canadian gold mine near Ontario. Before this discovery was made, it was only known that these three domains of life branched off around 3 billion years ago.
