First you have to find out if 48" or 64" is the diameter. 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches.  You have a  500 gallon tank so you need to figure out how may cubic inches of volume in the tank.  
The formula for the volume of a cylinder (fuel tank) is:Pi X heigth X (1/2 diameter) squared.
Next, divide the total cubic inches of tank volume by Pi.   Then divide by either 48 or 64.  Take the square root of that number.  If the result is 1/2 of the other number then that number is the diameter.  If not, then the other number is the diameter.  Now multiply 27.5 X Pi X (1/2 diameter) squared and divide the result by 231 to obtain volume in gallons..
