As of 2012, there are 83 metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties in England, and these are made up from the 48 ceremonial counties. The picture above shows the ceremonial counties of England and their flags.

The metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties are territorial divisions of England which were created for reasons of political, administrative and geographical demarcation.

The metropolitan counties are South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear, West Yorkshire and West Midlands, and these counties have population statistics generally ranging from 1.2 to 2.8 million.

There are 35 shire counties, which are non-metropolitan counties with multiple districts, whereas Unitary authorities refer to areas which have only one council. Most of the current counties can trace their roots to older divisions such as duchies and the Anglo-Saxon shires.

These metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties are based on the traditional ceremonial counties (of which there are 48 in total), and these counties are appointed a Lord Lieutenant. Ceremonial counties may be comprised of a combination of county council areas and unitary authorities, and were further divided for administrative and governmental purposes.

England is not only the largest but also the most populous country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - and London, the largest city in the British Isles, is the country's capital city. It is also the capital of the United Kingdom and the political and economic center of the country.
