It is now generally accepted that language in the sense of using sounds etc to communicate, can be found elsewhere in the animal kingdom too. That doesn't mean that other animals can use language on anything like the same level as humans, but tests have shown that some great apes, for instance, can learn to use words on a similar level to a small child. Research is now going on with other animals such as dolphins.
