Chemistry is the study of the make-up and composition of chemicals and materials in our atmosphere. Everything in life is affected by chemical reactions and the areas that are studied under the chemistry branch include the following:

  • Chemical composition
This involves looking at what exactly makes up a particular substance. Taking water as an example, by looking at the different elements and gases that it comprises, we can see it is composed of two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen, hence the chemical symbol of H2O.

  • Molecular positioning
This looks at the types of molecules that make up the substance. Are they gases or liquids for example. It also looks at things such as how they react to other molecules to produce other compounds.

  • Polarity
This is the study of electrons in different substances by adding electronic charges to them. The water molecule is often quoted as an example of polarity as it contains an unequal sharing of electrons in the hydrogen and oxygen.

  • Chemical reactions
This looks at how substances react with other substances and under different conditions such as heating and cooling down.

  • Reactants
Similar to looking chemical reactions this looks at how a substance reacts when it comes into contact with other substances or reactants.
