K2 is the second largest mountain in the world (after Mount Everest) and is located in the Himalayan mountain range on the border between Pakistan and China.

Where is K2?
K2 is located on the border between Taxkorgan Tajik (an autonomous county of Xinjiang, China) and the Gilgit-Balistan (a region in the North-east of Pakistan).

The mountain forms part of the Karakoram segment, which in turn is part of the greater Himalayan Range.

K2 stands at 28,521 feet, and is an awe-inspiring site for all in this area to see.

There are not many people who can boast about climbing this towering natural wonder, though - because it is notoriously difficult to climb.

Climbing K2

The first team to successfully reach the mount's summit was an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio - although two climbers from his team were the only ones to actually reach the top.

Although K2 is located on a political border between two countries, the mountain is currently under Pakistani administration.

It is definitely a destination that anyone traveling in this area will want to make sure to visit!

If this giant mountain has captured your imagination, why not check out the following documentary about a team that attempted to climb the mountain in 2009.
