Asphalt shingle is an extremely popular variety of roof shingle that is used to protect buildings, generally residences from the elements. The main reason that it is so popular around the world is the fact that it is relatively cheap in comparison to other roofing materials and it is also extremely easy to install so quite often home owners can install the material themselves thus saving a great deal of money on contractors or roofing experts. There are a number of different locations that you can obtain good quality asphalt shingle roofing from. You will be able to purchase good quality materials from a number of your local high street stores and also from a number of websites. The websites will generally have the best choice of product and also the lowest prices. However, it is important that you know exactly how much asphalt shingle you need to purchase so you will need to measure the dimensions of the roofing area that you wish to cover in order to calculate the number of asphalt squares you will need to purchase. A single square of asphalt will cover an area the size of 10 x 10 or 100 square feet. So by using this calculation you should easily be able to work out how many squares you will need to purchase to effectively cover your roof. It is always advisable to buy a little extra just in case any errors are made when you are having the material fitted to your roof.

It will cover a 10'x 10' area unless they are architectural shingles. There are usually 4 bundles per square for architectural versus 3 bundles per square for regular three tab shingles

It's hard to say, because different asphalt shingles from different companies will be in different sizes. Obviously they all have to meet some kind of standard, but sizes can vary.

The question is flawed; it's like saying how much does a pound of feathers weigh. A square is 100 square feet. Period.

1 square is 100 sq ft. A square cannot be 50 sq ft or 200 sq ft. That's like say 1 foot could be 5 inches or 20 inches. These are set dimensions. 1 sq = 10'x10'.
