I believe 400 meters is 1/4th of a mile. Think of 1 lap around a track is a quarter mile and most tracks are 400 meters long

There are 1609.34 meters in a mile (5,280ft*12in*2.54cm=160934cm)

so 300/1609= approx. .1875 or 3/16th of a mile  (i used 1600 instead of 1609 to get a fraction answer)

Knowing a simple and precisely accurate conversion factor is helpful.  Just memorize this:  1 foot is .3048 meters.  That is the precise ratio.

300 meters divided by .3048 is: 984.25196850393700787401574803 feet.

5280 feet (one mile) divided by that number yields: 0.1864113576712001908852302553 miles.

The decimals run on, but that should be precise enough for most purposes.  :-)

You can utilize that same ratio to convert between miles and kilometers, millimeters (or microns even) and thousandths of an inch, and so on.

So hang onto that one:  .3048
