Well, the Latin word is gula, but if you want to get scientific the throat is actually made up of several different parts:

  • pharynx
  • larynx
  • epiglottis
  • esophagus
  • trachea
There are also various blood vessels and muscles that make up the throat, as well as a jugular vein.
Mammals have the distinctive feature of only having two bones in their throat area:
  • hyoid bone
  • clavicle
