Even within ones own country non standard units can lead to disaster.
The classic tale is the one where the satellite launch was a failure because the US scientist working on the launch had their units in metrics while the engineers on the same launch were using the English system. The launch was a complete failure with the rocket not even making orbit.
In the US this is still the case today with scientist using the metric system and engeneers using the English system.
