It should be the first hash mark past the 1/4 inch mark if your ruler is broken down to 1/16ths, but just count how many hash marks there are between 0 and the 1 inch mark and go from there, as every hash mark is a different length according to the fraction size you're looking for like 1/4ths, 1/8ths, etc
