A forest ranger can see for a distance of 12 miles from a firetower.How many square miles can he observe?

Assuming that he can see 12 miles in all directions. He is in the centre of a circle of radius 12. The area of such a circle is pi*r^2

144 * 3.142

That's 452 square miles. (Quite a lot really)

I actually did the math and you exactly correct! Took a while but your answer is correct by all means.

I tend to over-complicate things. I couldn't find my answer because I was missing the land around. Trees/Hills/Mountains would impair the area of observation, while plains and downhill would offer an advantage.
