The Earth must be in perfect alignment between the moon and the sun for a lunar eclipse to happen. That only happens once in a while.

An eclipse of the moon is when it passes into the shadow of the earth. A new moon is when the side of the moon you see is not lit. (It is night on this side of the moon)
