Friction, physical barriers, energy fields (such as magnetism), etc... Come to mind but I'm not sure if this question is as general as it is worded. A specific condition would be encasement in ice but there would be infinite answers if you are asking specifically.

Well, movement is relative to a specific reference point.

Gravity is the cause of friction.  Friction is typically the major counter- force found on earth to oppose motion.
