Also just learned of this news story.... I guess anything biodegradable would be preferable to plastic beads that cause a whole bunch of problems.

The microbeads have been banned in California for a while now. I hadn't even noticed they were gone until recently when I saw a news report saying they had already been banned. I think in time they will or have replaced the beads with natural exfoliating substances. Like oatmeal, rice, apricot seeds, walnut shells, and bamboo among others.
