Aristotle, apparently, classified creatures into plants and animals, then animals as to blood or bloodless, then how they got around: Walking, flying or swimming. This system was used into the 1600's. Adam, the first man gave every animal that God created in the Garden of Eden, and people afterwards continue to name animals as new species were born. I don't know if that counts as 'classifying' animals, though :) !
