As it has come to the forefront in recent years, our climate has been the subject of much discussion and concern. There is abundant evidence from all the related sciences indicating that the earth is in a period of warming, that among other aspects, three undeniable facts are known: The temperatures are rising year-to-year, the polar glaciers are melting at high rate, and the sea levels are rising. Living in S Florida as I do, I can attest first-hand to the latter. I doubt anyone reading this is unaware of the increasing frequency of dramatic weather events.

I tend to follow the science here. Carbon is being released at increasingly unprecedented levels since the rise of the industrial revolution. There is a credible and inevitable threat to life rising in all this, one that evidence shows is being accelerated by the by-products of our industry.

Some investigation into positions of denial show many are suspiciously backed by vested interests such as oil companies, and perpetuated by those who know (or care) little of science, groups that inspire no trust.

Conversely, even the current torchbearer of medieval superstition, the Vicar of Rome himself, Pope Francis has recognized the validity of the science and warned of consequences both ongoing and those yet unseen (Papal Encyclical - June 2015).

My view is that things are worsening and big trouble for our descendents lies ahead if serious, tangible action to mitigate these problems isn't undertaken globally in the very near future.

It was actually a quote from a scientist whose glass must always be at least half full.

This is one of those times when people need to pay attention. There is too much at stake.

Hi Toxic Hairball,

The fascinating British scientist James Lovelock has backed off from his position on climate change. Here is what he told THE GUARDIAN in an interview this September 30th:

“CO2 is going up, but nowhere near as fast as they thought it would. The computer models just weren’t reliable. In fact,” he goes on breezily, “I’m not sure the whole thing isn’t crazy, this climate change.

And Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis of 1979 is utterly fascinating.

The Earth has always faced climate change. It is a fact of nature. We couldn't have had two ice ages without it. Whether man is speeding up the process, probably. Will it have dire consequences?...I don't know.

In all honesty I believe a lot of people who built their homes in low lying places are now whining because they didn't pay attention to the cycles the Earth has always gone through.

I have absolutely no doubt that our climate is changing.

As several other people have pointed out, this is nothing new in the life of the planet. What IS new is that we have never before had more than 7 billion people all contributing to the breakdown of natural resources.

I don't think the change is as rapid as the panic-merchants would have us believe but it's happening. Doing something about it will be so unpopular that few politicians would be willing to risk votes by setting any effective prophylaxis into motion.

Yep. Whatever is going on, there certainly seems to be very little political will to move on it.

There's a great deal of financial pressure on politicians (from their backers) to do nothing.

As I mentioned in my answer Otis, Oil companies have no interest in saving the planet. They actively work to destroy it

It is happening and (for the most part) it is our fault.

There will be people who say that climate change in natural and has happened repeatedly in Earth's history.

That is true.

This is (using all known data and precedent) the only time in known history that extreme global warming has happened without some other (apart from human action in this case) event causing it.

It is also the fastest increase in global temperatures ever, without other global influences/catastrophe, so far as we can tell.

It is convenient to rubbish all of the real, properly- researched evidence, and say "I don't think it's happening" because someone with a vested interest in big business or energy production or political gain says something you can cling to.

Just remember everyone, what you are bequeathing to your children and grandchildren.

Looking back in history the earth has undergone many climactic changes .. THIS what we are experiencing now seems like it's really nothing new.

I don't doubt the emissions that we are generating doesn't have an effect .. It most certainly does.  It's just 'speeding' things  up a bit.

Climate change has happened throughout history, those dinosaurs where warned that they should recycle their plastic bags and stop building more runways and flying private jets.

I think the whole thing isn't about saving the planet it's about taxing the little man, why the big man rakes in all the money.

If climate change was No1 on the agenda why are they agreeing extra runways to all airports? There is us being taxed on carrier bags, on cars, recycling our little butts off, while they fly around in private jets. They care more about "the economy" MONEY and their grubby fat fingers.

Those electric cars aren't better for the environment,  their batteries are a nightmare to recycle. You could run a car on vegetable oil or hydropower no emissions,  will they let us? Nope, price of vegetable oil shot up and we were taxed on it for a food substance. Climate change maybe real, but our governments caring? Baloney.

Honestly Ray, they are treating us like mugs. All leaders flew by private jet to the climate change meetings, I bet they have a right laugh at us. Anything they can slam a tax on they will.
