Edison bought the electric idea patent off Henry Woodward in 1876. Edison had his first successful attempts on 22 October 1879 and filed for a patent in 1880.

It wasn't invented by Thomas Edison of course. He simply improved it and marketed it.Many other inventors had produced such devices well before 1879 , the first incandescent bulb seems to date back to 1840 and it was patented by an English inventor in 1841 called Frederick de Moleyns.This was for a platinum filament in a vacuum tube.

Edison put together a practical light bulb on October 22, 1879.
