Lavender farming has become big business in South Africa where the sunny climate and well drained soil of the Western Cape and particulary the Swartberg region and the Karoo, have become areas where lavender and other herb crops like rosemary, are grown and harvested on a large scale, to harvest essential oils, which are sold as a cash crop and a lucrative one at that.
Two farms that you can have a look at on the web are in this area.
The first is Mymering estate,in Ladismith, which has 36,000 lavender plants and 24,000 rosemary bushes. Oil is produced and sold on. The farm is situated in the Cape in the fertile Dwarsrivier valley, 40km from Calitzdorp and 90km from Outshoorn. The farm is near the Swartberg pass with Towerkop in view, apart from the wonderful mountain scenery
of the Swartberg, there are also cottages and lodges for rent to tourists, so you can experience the farm.
www.rooms for Africa.co.za and then put in Mymering Estate.
Another good site featuring a lavender farm in the Karoo is in Klipdrift near Graaf Reinet called www.Herald la feme lav farm htm
