The inner surface of the earth consists of a number of layers. The outermost layer is called the crust, and comprises the oceans and the continents. The thickness of the crust varies in the continents and the ocean basins. The continents are between 35-70 kilometers thick, while the ocean basins are 5-10 kilometers thick. The composition of the crust is primarily alumino silicates.

The next layer is the mantle, and consists of the upper and lower mantle. The mantle is approximately 2900 kilometers thick, and is composed mainly of ferro-magnesium silicates. The mantle is where the maximum internal heat of the earth is located.

Finally, there is the core. The core is divided into the outer core and the inner core. The outer core consists of liquid matter and is approximately 2300 kilometers thick, while the inner core is solid and approximately 1200 kilometers thick. The outer core is composed mainly of a nickel-iron alloy. The outer core is what is responsible for the earth's magnetic field. The inner core, on the other hand, is composed mainly of iron.
