The information obtained from a sample is often used to make decision about a population for example, on the basis of a sample it is required to decide whether a given coin is fair, or whether a certain drug is effective in curing a particular disease. To arrive at such decisions certain rules or procedures are used, these procedures are called hypothesis testing and test of hypothesis. Hypothesis testing is also known as test of significance or decision procedures.

A statistical hypothesis is a statement about one or more parameters of a population or populations. This statement may or may not be correct. The validity of this statement is tested on the basis of sample from that population or populations.
