Your rib cage is a vital part of the structure of your body. The skeletal system to a human is like the frame of a car. Without it you could not walk or stand. The rib cage is also the protector of all the organs that reside in your chest cavity. Without the rib cage your lungs and heart etc. Would be extremely susceptible to life threatening injuries just from a small fall or even a poke in the chest.

The rib cage is part of the respiratory system. It encloses the activity of the lungs, this is to protect them from harm. The rib cage expands and attracts with the lungs giving the lungs room to move, otherwise the lungs would struggle to breathe.
