The planet that is closest to the sun is Mercury.

More Interesting Facts About Mercury
  • Mercury is actually named after the wing-footed Roman messenger of the gods.
  • Mercury spins around the sun at a speed of about thirty miles per second. It completes its journey around the sun in about eighty-eight days.
  • The days and the nights are very long on Mercury. It takes approximately fifty-nine days for the planet Mercury to make a single rotation, because it only spins at a rate of about six miles per hour.
  • Mercury is very similar to the Earth because it appears to have a light silicate rock surface. Many scientists believe that the planet Mercury may have a very heavy, iron-rich core that makes up more than half of its total volume.
  • Scientists and astronauts use the Mariner 10 probe to learn about and take pictures of Mercury. Before the Mariner 10 probe, very little was known about the planet.

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. I learned a mnemonic to help me remember the order. It goes like this:

  • My (Mercury)
  • Very (Venus)
  • Easy (Earth)
  • Method (Mars)
  • Just (Jupiter)
  • Speeds (Saturn)
  • Up (Uranus)
  • Naming (Neptune)
  • Planets (Pluto)
Pluto isn't considered a planet any more, though, so I guess you can just take that one off!

I don't know why, but for some reason, most people seem to think that Mars is closest to the sun. I think it's all to do with 'the red planet' and stuff, but that's wrong. Or so I have been told, anyway.

Hope this helps!

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (if you count it as a planet). That's the order of the planets, with the closest to the sun first.

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. It is also a dead planet, meaning it has no hot iron core.

The answer is Mercury.

Fun Fact: Because of Mercury's short distance from the sun, it is the hottest planet in our solar system.

Mercury is the planet closest to our sun.  Then come Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.  Pluto would be the farthest if it were still considered a planet.
