The answer is, quite simply, yes. The wood is stress tested individually before it is engineered together. It is also chemically bonded and laminated to ensure it is totally solid. There may be a need to protect it with waterproofing depending on the weather and speed of the work, but engineered beams are used in attics for loft conversions and in porches too, so it’s quite common for them to be used in an exterior application.
There are several varieties of engineered wood, and it is quite possible to build an entire building from engineered wood so long as it has the right treatment to protect it from the elements.
