When conducting research it is important that the research team uses a problem solving team. This problem solving team will create a problem statement and will also list the objectives that need to be achieved when addressing the problem. Here are some tips on how to create a problem statement and objectives:

  • Recognize the problem

The first part of your problem statement should be recognizing exactly what the problem that needs to be addressed is. This section of the statement should inform the rest of the team what the problem is that they are facing.

  • Where is the problem?

Not only do they need to recognize the problem, but they also must recognize who the problem is effecting and why. This should also feature an explanation as to who will benefit from the solution. Finally, this statement should list which higher authority or person will decide when the problem has been resolved.

  • How to resolve the problem?

The final part of the statement needs to state exactly what measures and actions can be put in place to solve the issue at hand. This should include all the costs and resources will need to be used in order to solve the problem.

  • State your objectives

Here you may wish to summarize all that you have covered during the rest of the problem statement into bullet-point objectives. These should be concise statements that say exactly what will be done and how it will be done in order to solve a particular section of the problem.
