The chemical formulas for aluminum carbonate and hydrochloric acid are Al2(CO3)3 and HCl respectively. Aluminum carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to yield aluminum chloride and carbonic acid. It is a double displacement reaction in which aluminum carbonate and hydrochloric acid exchange their components. The carbonic acid which is produced during this reaction is unstable so, it decomposes into carbon dioxide and water. The ionic equations for the reaction are;

Al2(CO3)3 ------> 2Al+3 + 3CO3-2

HCl ------ > H+1 + Cl-1

Al+3 + 3Cl-1 ------ > AlCl3

2H+1 + CO3-2 ------ > H2CO3

Al+3 + 3Cl-1 + 2H+1 + CO3-2 ------ > AlCl3 + H2CO3

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is;

Al2(CO3)3 + 6HCl ------ > 2AlCl3 + 3H2CO3

Or

Al2(CO3)3 + 6HCl ------ > 2AlCl3 + 3H2O + 3CO2
