The main thing to remember is not to trim heather so severely that you cut back to the part of the wood that is not putting out green shoots. Almost all heathers will not recover from this, even though your experience with shrubs and bushes is most likely different.
Wait until the heather is done flowering and then cut it back to promote growth.
