Canvey Island is located in Essex, UK, 30 miles east of London. The island was mainly agricultural land until the 20th century when it became a popular seaside resort. Between 1911 and 1951 it was a very fashionable place to visit and it was thought that the air had healing properties. Thousands of people from London flocked to Canvey Island every year and in the 30s, a seafront was developed.

In 1953, the North Sea Flood wiped out the island, killing 28 residents and forcing 13,000 to be temporarily evacuated. Consequently to this event, the island is now protected by 15 miles of concrete wall. The island was the first site in the world to receive a delivery of liquefied natural gas by container ship and is now notorious for its relationship to the petrochemical industry. The biggest landmarks on Canvey Island that can still be seen today include the Lobster Smack Public House and the International Style Labworth Café. The Lobster Smack Public House was recognised by Charles Dickens in Great Expectations and the 17th century building stands prominently on the corner of the island. The International Style Labworth Café is a symbol of Canvey Island’s days a busy seaside resort and was renovated in 1996.
