Any scientific test involving chemicals should be approached with caution, as some of the resulting reactions can prove violent and/or toxic.

Proper precautions should be taken, and exact instructions, from a reliable source, should be followed. For a test differentiating alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, you need to download something like the PDF available at physci.mc.maricopa.edu

For a greater range of experiments for such a test, you can also download PDFs of instructions at grossmont.edu, classes.kvcc.edu or chemed.chem.purdue.edu.

If you needed to only test the difference between alkene and an alkane, the process is rather simpler. When added to an alkene, brown Bromine water will become colorless, but when added to an alkane, the Bromine water will remain its original brown color. Alkanes, such as butane and gasoline, also react easily in the presence of a spark or flame.
