If you lose your little toe you cannot balance but if you lose your big toe you can still walk just a little bit off balance.

As with all our toes, each little piggy has a purpose and no, it's not to make use say '@*^&'*, who put that *&^@%$ing table there!' when we accidentally stub it! As with all our feet digits, we require them in order to stay in a standing up position. They help us to retain our balance. People with diabetes or people who have suffered frostbite and have had their toes removed, soon notice the difference. It's much harder to walk and keep your balance without one of your little piggies.
The toes are also there to enable us to flex them when we walk and help us to grip the surface of the floor, even inside our shoes. If we didn't have shoe designers we would all be much more reliant on our toes to help us grip the surface we were walking on. Imagine walking around on just the soles of your feet ~ ouch! Not only would it be painful, but we would be slipping all over the place. Not to mention we would have no balance and gravity would pull us down every time we wobbled a bit!

No but if you lost your big toe, your balance would be impaired somewhat.
