The short answer is that non-Muslim people traditionally inhabit the south and the Muslim nomadic tribes of the north are moving south due to drought conditions in their traditional grazing areas.

Since the people in the south region are not willing to give up their lands to the northerners and have rebelled, the government has supported terrorist actions against the non-Muslim population of the south.

The western world isn't becoming involved for several reasons: Sudan doesn't supply a large percentage of the world's oil supply, in recent years it's governments have been hostile to the west and received support from the Soviet Union, a serious military intervention in the area could turn into a situation worse than what we face in Iraq.

I wish more could be done to correct the injustice these people suffer under but ultimately freedom and liberty can't be purchased for you, you must win it for yourself. I would support the rebels but I don't want to see us in another major conflict in support of people who really don't care about us in the first place.

There has been a lot of money raised for relief, but I don't think Darfur has seen very much of it. They are in a relief camp living in poverty and dying of starvation, while the modern world watches.

I support most of the facts listed here by other users, but I think it has been neglected that even as a genocide, this one is particularly brutal, to the point of using organized starvation, poisoning of wells, missiles on very small and defenseless isolated villages, and even rape. The conflict is very complicated, and now bears the mark more of racism than anything else as the conflict mutates. I'm no expert on this but i know of a couple places you could go if you were interested in finding out more.

A group called the Janjaweed is attacking the nomadic people, and now the people are rebelling. Besides, Sudan's government is corrupt and the government can't control all that goes on. It also doesn't help that their government is taking sides between the nomads and the janjaweeds. They have no outstretched hand over the region and can't control the people. The government is basically their military.

As for the help that is being administered, I am not sure, but all I know is that throwing money at a problem never solves anything, and that the money that goes to these donations and stuff usually never gets fully to them.

Basically the most that's going on is genocide. Many are suffering and the government simply is not being aware of the damage being done to these people and their human rights are also being violated.
