Sesame seeds contain sesamin and sesamolin both very unique beneficial fibers called lignans. They are about 4.24 gm of fiber in a quarter cup of sesame seeds or 7.9 gm per 100 gm. The fiber found in sesame seeds helps fight cholesterol and high blood pressure. To animals it is a rich source of vitamin E and one of these fibers, sesamin, helps protect the liver from damage due to oxidation.

They also contain minerals such as copper, zinc, manganese, tryptophan, calcium, manganese, iron, phosphorus and vitamin B1. Sesamie seeds help the body by protecting it from free radicals. Phytic acid found in them helps inhibit cancer, especially of the colon. They are commonly used in Asian cooking and in Middle Eastern sweets and also find mention in the Arabian nights in the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. The password to the caves entrance is nothing but "open sesame".
