Active transport requires energy from respiration.  The energy is used by carrier proteins that span the membranes of the root hair cells.  These carrier proteins facilitate the transport of mineral ions across the membrane of the root hair cells against a concentration gradient (i.e. From a low concentration in the soil to a high concentration inside the cell).  Hope this helps someone

Yes, it does.
Water and other mineral salts found in the soil move against the concentration gradient to be absorbed by the roots as there is a higher concentration in the roots than in the soil.
