Asking how a company manages their internal information and data on external issues can be as ambiguous asking how long is a piece of string. Many companies have different ways of storing and distributing their data, depending on a number of variables.

Smaller companies may use a standard database which will be quite adequate for a firm, which only has to deal with a small amount of information that is not particularly sensitive. This is compared to a huge multi-national organization, who often have large programs in operation for dealing with their files and documents.

Any company should be extremely cautious about how they manage their data storage, as rival companies and their employees will always be a potential threat when it comes to sensitive information. Many will have their own, custom built database system, which will be designed specifically to hold and organize data of importance to the management and staff of that company.
This is not to say that all employees of rival business will be out to route through information on their rivals, but being careless may lead to awkward and embarrassing situations if it ends up in the wrong hands.

Simply put, all companies, regardless of size, employee numbers and income generated will be very careful in the way they store their information and will almost certainly employ an IT specialist to design a custom built system, in order to manage their data in a secure and responsible fashion.
