Cardiac output and circulation are two events that can aid in venous return.

  • The circulatory system is based on the heart pumping blood out into the body so that it can go through the body delivering oxygen and then return to the heart again.

The first thing that must occur for blood to be in the body is the cardiac output in which the blood is pumped from the heart into the body from the ventricle. The amount of output is what the venous return should see with the input of blood after circulation.

When the output increases the ventricle will increase its action in order to take on the increased volume sent out by the heart in the first place.

Once the blood leaves the body it will travel through veins to the head, limbs, and organs. Once it has made the appropriate path through the body it will be pumped back into the heart. This is deoxygenated blood that goes back into the heart after circulation.

With the output that aids blood flowing out and the circulation system that allows the blood to be pumped back towards the heart, the only thing left is for the ventricle to pump open, as blood returns in the same volume at it was pumped out.

In order for any blood to go through the body, the heart must be pumping - allowing blood in and out. If the heart has an obstruction it can cause issues within the body such as a slow venous return or a slower cardiac output. Heart disease often accounts for problems to occur in the heart that lead to issues with the flow of blood including the venous return volume to the heart.
