Christian Barnard performed the first heart transplant on December 3rd, 1967. He was assisted by his brother Marius Barnard and a team of 30 doctors. This operation lasted for nearly nine hours. This first operation was conducted on the 55 year old Louis Washkansky, who was suffering from heart and diabetes disease. The heart was transplanted from a younger woman named Denise Darvall. She died in a car accident. However the patient also survived for only 18 days after the successful operation had taken place.

Some of Barnard's other famous operations were double transplants, which were performed in the year 1974, subsequent artificial valves using animal hearts for treatment that was an emergency. This experiment was conducted in the year 1977. Ten orthotropic transplants were performed between the years 1967 to 1973.
