The Republic of Panama is a country in Central America. It was a former colony of Spain and Colombia. It gained its independence from Spain on November 28, 1821 and from Colombia on November 3, 1903. Panama covers an area of 75, 517 square kilometres and has a population of 3, 232, 000. Spanish is the official language spoken in Panama.

The neighbouring countries of Panama are Costa Rica to the northwest and Colombia to the southeast. There are two chief units of currency in Panama. They are the Balboa and the US dollar.
