Test tubes, also known as culture tubes or sample tubes, are glass or clear plastic tubes designed for experiments, usually in chemistry. They are usually used for holding liquids but can also be used to culture things like bacteria and fungi.
Alternatives include beakers, petri dishes, and graduated cylinders. The benefit of the test tube is that it fulfills the functions of each of these three combined, however these are perfectly adequate substitutes.

Beakers are for liquids, especially chemicals. They are generally wide and quite chunky, with a lip for pouring and fluid measurement marks down the side. Petri dishes are for cultivation purposes. Their flat, cylindrical shape makes them ideal test pads for bacterial or fungal growth and the observation of this.
